TAI Wins $100 Million Contract from Northrop

By BURAK EGE BEKDIL, ANKARA

TUSAS Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) has won a $100 million contract from Los Angeles-based Northrop Grumman as part of the multinational Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, the Turkish company said in a statement.

Under the contract, inked June 14 during the Paris Air Show, the company will manufacture composite fuselage parts and subassembly units for the U.S.-led JSF program.

TAI Chairman Hasan Peker Gunal and Northrop Grumman Vice President Janis Pamiljans signed the agreement during a ceremony attended by Turkey’s top procurement official, Murad Bayar.

In April, TAI merged with Turkish Aircraft Industries (TUSAS), a small, government-owned company, as part of a government program to restructure the country’s defense industry.

Earlier this year, TUSAS had purchased a combined 49 percent stake in TAI from its U.S. shareholders — Lockheed Martin Aeronautics and General Electric — bringing TUSAS’ shares in TAI to 98 percent. At a shareholders’ meeting in March, TAI and TUSAS agreed to merge under TAI’s legal entity.

TAI, which assembled F-16 fighter jets in Turkey in the 1980s and 1990s, today manufactures parts for Boeing, Chicago, and Stratford, Conn.-based helicopter-maker Sikorsky. The company also is a participant in the multinational JSF program and the A400M, known in Turkey as the Future Large Aircraft.

TAI also has teamed with Construcciones Aeronauticas, Madrid, now EADS-CASA, to build CN-235 transport planes for the Turkish military, and Eurocopter, Marignane, France, to produce AS-532 Cougar utility helicopters.
